About Us AND OUR FRIENDS

About our Church

Our building is over 160 years old but what we preach is as up-to-date as it always was! Langford Evangelical Church - L E C - Life Eternal in Christ. That's what Jesus said when He was praying to God (John's Gospel, Chapter 17 verse 3) "This is life eternal that they might know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."

Was Jesus right? Some people think that there are many ways to God. Jesus said that He is the only way (John 14 verse 6) "I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by Me." That's a staggering claim, isn't it?
Surely if we do good things and don't harm anyone we will be all right won't we? Yet a very religious and respected man named Nicodemus came to see Jesus (John Chapter 3) and he was told "You must be born again!"

We all need to be completely changed. Eternal life is not something you may or may not get when you die - it is something that you have immediately you come to know Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. It goes on as you grow as a Christian and eventually takes you right into God's presence, to be there for ever. That is Heaven, a real place of joy and peace. (See Psalm 16 verse 11.)

About our Pastor

George and Christine Beacham

George and Christine Beacham

George Beacham became a Christian when he was 20. Taken by a work colleague to see a Christian film, he was gripped by the words of John's Gospel, Chapter 14 verse 6: "Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life". That night he realised that there was no other way to God and he came to believe that Jesus had died for him upon the Cross.

The whole direction of his life was changed and a great thirst to know more of the Bible, coupled with a deep longing to share the love of Christ with others, led him to study at Chelston Tower Bible School, then based in Torquay. This was followed by an itinerant preaching and teaching ministry of almost 30 years, while he was still engaged in full-time employment.

In 1995, while living nearby, George found Langford Evangelical Church and walked in to see that verse from John 14 in front of him again. The warm and loving fellowship he found encouraged him to stay and he became a Church member in 1998.

He commenced a two-year FIEC "Prepared for Service" training course based in Reading in 2000 – an eventful year in which he married Christine, who had come to know Christ in a Mission at Langford as a teenager. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Lee, she had spent a good part of her life away from the village in her nursing career, followed by periods working in Bristol for the charities Muller Homes and Pilgrim Homes. Returning to live in the village in 1997, she had been introduced to George.

In 2003 the Church asked him to become a Deacon and he has taken on an increasing share of the Bible teaching over the last few years. In 2008 he took early retirement to have more time to help the Church.

The Moderator and the other Deacons approached George in mid 2009 and asked him to consider being the Pastor. God had already been speaking to him over many months and after prayer he agreed that this should be considered by the Church. In August 2009 the members unanimously invited him to accept the office.

See our Archives page for details of George's Ordination and Induction service.
